YouTube Home StudioI get asked what I use to make my videos on YouTube all the time. Here is the exact hardware I use for making video, along with a more budget friendly alternative that I have used in the past. By the way, don’t forget to scroll down and check out the software I use for video production as this is vital, especially for YouTube.
Camera: There is a reason top YouTuber’s and myself use the Canon 80 D the reason is its fast auto tracking, face recognition and flip out screen. When you are recording yourself you cant worry about focus and all that stuff. Sure there are other cameras out there but they are better suited for other use cases. An alternative to the Canon 80 D I used in the past was the Canon 750 D or The T6i in the US. As a desktop camera for live streams I now use the Logitech BRIO 4K, Webcam. But for a very long time I used the Logitech C930e and with the proper lighting it was more than enough. Still, the BRIO does bring much more quality.
Sound: The most important part of video is sound. Think about it! if you watch a bad video and the sound is good you can still watch it, but if you cant hear it or the sound is bad there is no hope. I use the Rhode NTG4 Plus as a shotgun mic, and the Zoom H5 to record my sound off camera (which you should be doing) but also as a USB microphone. Lately I added the Zoom SGH-6 shotgun capsule, and use it as a shotgun mic as well, instead of the Rhode NTG4. That’s how good it is!
Lighting: With the right lighting you can film on your mobile device or any camera you have around and it will look 10 times better than a great camera with poor lighting. I personally use a couple of Yongnuo YN 900 led lights have both warm and white light output matched with a foldable diffuser I also use a Neewer photo ring light for traveling and for mobile video. I also just recently ordered a Neewer super slim led light for lighting me up when I live stream on my desk, along with this Neewer Arm Swivel Clamp Clip Mount to hold it. A more affordable solution I would be this Neewer soft box kit which does the trick!
Run and Gun: You may have noticed many times, I am making videos from hotels, or various places around the world. I hate traveling heavy, so I tend to make these videos all on my iPhone 7. I use the Rhode Smart Lav Plus for sound, alternatively you can use the Shure MV88 Shotgun mic. I try to use natural light whenever available. But of not, this portable multi-function mini led light does the trick! Sometimes I use the Zhiyung Q Handheld stabilizer instead of my trusty Arkon Mount, that eliminates shakiness completely, and you can get film quality shots with. This is also a stabilizer that can easily attach to your sound source, and no software updating and mind numbing calibration techniques are needed!
Home Studio: For my black white background scenes, I use this awesome Oval Pop Out Backdrop and I do not recommend you go cheap. This pops out, can be taken with you or put away, and I have fixed this Heavy Duty Metal Clamp Holder on my wall, so I can just hang it on my wall in front of my white board, and take it down when I am not using it. No wrinkles, no stands and heavy equipment, no stress! I also use these Neewer Quick Release on my light stands and my trusty Arkon Mounts. I also recently ordered various remote Led lights and remote light bulbs for decoration. As well as sound panels to absorb sound.
Software: If you are not using TubeBuddy for YouTube then you are not going to reach the next level. This tool is used and recommended by the TOP YouTuber’s and it helps rank your videos and do various bulk tasks. Get it for free here. As for editing software I use Premier Elements anything else is overkill and too confusing. For sound cleaning when needed, I use Audacity which is an amazing free program. Finally for live streaming I use another free program OBS.
Hosting & Email Marketing: Finally I use Inmotion-Hosting for my websites and Get-Response for my email marketing, landing pages, webinars etc. I do not find any reason to use anything else as these work and their service is amazing.
